Fine art and art instruction by Dave Jones Fine art and art instruction by Dave Jones

Dave Jones

Dave Jones was born in 1948, in Palo Alto, California, home of Stanford University, FaceBook, the Whole Earth Catalog, birthplace of Silicon Valley, the Grateful Dead, psychodrama, the Merry Pranksters and Joan Baez. His father, R.T. Jones, was a NASA aerodynamicist whose hobbies were making violins and telescopes. His mother, Doris Cohen, was a NASA mathematician and the first woman at NASA to publish a scientific paper. Together they did the pioneering work on the invention of swept back wings for airplanes, allowing for supersonic flight and jet travel. Dave's two sisters are both classical musicians, one a violinist, the other a pianist.

All his life Dave has had equal passions for jazz and modern art.

He has been drawing and painting since he was 12, when he first saw an abstract painting by Jasper Johns -"I love abstract art because when it’s good it can put the viewer in touch with who they are, beyond their culture, psychology, history or personality. Abstract art, like jazz, expresses something about being human that otherwise does not get expressed in our world, and it's something we need to stay in touch with!"

As an artist David has been greatly influenced by Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly and Richard Gayton, (his drawing teacher at The California College of Arts and Crafts).

He's sold approximately 700 paintings and drawings, and has taught drawing, painting and color theory for young and old, both in his studio and in public venues. He's taught drawing and painting to "youth at risk" in the Mississippi Delta and has taught public school teachers how to teach their students art. David has won many awards for his paintings and drawings, and his work is in both private and corporate art collections around the world.  Over the past 35 years David has shown his work in approximately 60 one-man and group gallery shows. He's also been on the Mississippi Arts Commission Artist Roster of approved artists for grant-seeking institutions.

As a jazz musician Dave has performed in the New England area, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the Southern U.S. His major influences as a saxophonist have been Dexter Gordon, Charlie Rouse, Stan Getz, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Gene Ammons. He has composed 45 tunes and was recently nominated for the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters contemporary composition award. Dave has lectured on jazz for both young people and adults and he currently plays regularly along the Gulf Coast, from New Orleans to Destin, FL. Visit to hear him play and to listen to the tunes he's composed.

Dave lives in Long Beach, Mississippi with his wife Liz (an Episcopal priest).

General Business Policies

The purpose of David Jones Gallery is to add beauty to the world.

About The Paintings

Most of Dave's paintings are abstract - they have no subject matter, they are not paintings of something, or an expression of something. They have no hidden meaning nor need an explanation to enhance their value - they're just paintings - a spontaneous arrangement of colors and shapes that Dave found pleasing in some way. As such they're not for everyone - but if one speaks to you, you should own it and enjoy it every day! Dave's paintings only get better with time!

All original paintings or drawings are offered strictly on a first come, first served basis. The piece you intend to purchase may be no longer available even though it may still be presented on a website! In this case you may want to consider another piece or consider custom ordering a similar painting to suit your decor. You may purchase prints in a variety of formats of most of Dave's work (whether sold or not) at Fine Art

All David Jones paintings and drawings are made using archival quality materials (usually acrylic paint on 1.5" deep "gallery wrap" style canvas), signed on the front, and titled and dated on the back.  All work is guaranteed against defect.

Paintings are being offered for sale directly online, in brick and mortar galleries with whom we have a representation contract, and through art fairs and email marketing.
