David Jones

David Jones was born in 1948, in Palo Alto, California, home of Stanford University, the Whole Earth Catalog, birthplace of Silicon Valley, the Grateful Dead, psychodrama, the Merry Pranksters and Joan Baez. His family has always been very musical and artistic, as well as scientifically inclined. His father was an aerodynamicist whose hobby was making violins, and his mother was a mathematician, passionately in love with opera and classical music. Together they did the pioneering work on the invention of swept back wings for airplanes, allowing for supersonic flight and jet travel. His two sisters are both classical musicians, one a violinist, the other a pianist.

All his life David has had equal passions for jazz and abstract art.

He has been drawing and painting since he was 12, when he first saw a painting by Jasper Johns -"I love abstract art because when it’s good it can put the viewer in touch with who they are beyond their culture, psychology, history or personality. Abstract art, like jazz, expresses something about being human that otherwise does not get expressed in our world." David will soon be bringing his love of abstract art to Mississippi landscape paintings in a series called "Mississippi Mudscapes".

As an artist David has been greatly influenced by Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly and Richard Gayton, (his drawing teacher at The California College of Arts and Crafts).

He's sold approximately 600 paintings and drawings, and has taught drawing, painting and color theory for young and old, both in his studio and in public venues. He's taught drawing and painting to youth at risk in the Mississippi Delta and has taught public school teachers how to teach their students art.

David has won many awards for his paintings and drawings, and his work is in both private and corporate collections around the world.  Over the past 25 years David has shown his work in approximately 45 one-man and group gallery shows. He's also been on the Mississippi Arts Commission Artist Roster of approved artists for grant-seeking institutions.

David welcomes your comments on his work.  Please email him at dj@davidjonesgallery.com

As a jazz musician David has performed in the New England area, the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as in Mississippi.  He's played with Mississippi musicians Eden Brent, John Horton, Knight Bruce, Raphael Semmes, Donnie Brown, Willie Willis, Dr. Gene Gaddy, Danny Enfante, Ray Zanders, Larry Keating and many others. His major influences as a saxophonist have been Dexter Gordon, Charlie Rouse, Stan Getz, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Gene Ammons.  David has lectured on jazz and the lives and times of jazz musicians for both young people and adults.

David lives on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with his wife Liz (an Episcopal priest), his daughter Sarah, Sam the Welsh fairy dog and two bully cats.
